Remote work is and will remain a major topic in most companies in the future. Professional development also largely takes place digitally in front of one’s own computer. But is employee motivation at home even possible? After all, the personal contact is missing. An exciting podcast provides answers.

Remote work has become almost indispensable in most companies since the Corona pandemic. For some team members, motivation may be slowly waning, and the desire to return to the office is growing. This raises the question for HR managers: How can I motivate my team to work and continue their education at home? In the podcast from detektor.fm, organizational and team developer Bettina Rollow provides answers.

Employee Motivation and Professional Development in Remote Work

  1. Motivation starts with your employees. Therefore, make it clear to them why they enjoy their job and how important each individual's work is.

  2. Provide orientation for the entire team. Clarify the shared focus and the common goal that the whole team is working towards.

  3. Give your employees the freedom they need for their daily life. Be flexible! Ensure that work is not perceived as a burden.

  4. Think of regular feedback and discussions within the entire team. Check whether the current processes are sensible or whether they need to be adjusted.

  5. Be authentic! As a leader, you should also admit your own mistakes and correct decisions.

And that’s exactly why employee motivation is so important: In remote work, the personal exchange with colleagues is missing, and the boundaries between work and private life blur. All these factors can drain your employees' energy. Therefore, consciously offer opportunities for digital exchange and organize, for example, small virtual coffee breaks or a random chat where the team can also discuss topics outside of work.

Professional Development as an Additional Motivator in Remote Work

The motivation tips mentioned can easily be transferred to corporate training, as you should not neglect this either. Therefore, we provide you with helpful tips on how to achieve motivation even in remote work!

Im Dauer-Homeoffice sinkt die Motivation der Mitarbeiter für die alltägliche Arbeit und für E-Learning.

In continuous remote work, employee motivation for everyday tasks and E-learning declines.

Tips for Employee Development in Remote Work

  1. From the very beginning, convey the goal of your educational measure. What is the purpose of the course, and what impact does what is learned have on the work of each individual employee?

  2. Provide orientation and state the purpose of the individual measures for the entire team. What advantages does the learning unit or course bring for the work in the team, the department, or the whole company?

  3. Offer flexible learning times by making the content accessible online at any time. Set as flexible time frames as possible for when the content should be worked on to give your employees some freedom in scheduling.

  4. Plan regular feedback loops, from and for your employees. How do they feel about your course, and are you satisfied with their progress? Through direct feedback, you can optimally adjust time planning, content, and courses.

  5. As a course leader, remain authentic and close to your participants. Emphasize media variety to engage different learning types.

All tips share an important core: Stay in contact with your employees and do not leave them “alone” with new digital learning formats! With these five simple tips, your employees will stay motivated for training measures and can learn sustainably even in remote work.
