Adaptive learning is on trend. But what does it actually mean and what benefits does it bring for employees and trainers? We have researched for you and summarized the most important learnings in the article.

In most training sessions, many different types of learners come together, all of whom are supposed to participate in the same course. But how can you accommodate all learner types in corporate training? One possibility: adaptive learning!

The core idea: Learning is becoming increasingly individual, and this applies to the learning content itself.

"Adaptive learning" simply means tailored learning to the learner themselves. Everyone should be met where they currently stand with their previous skills. This way, no one is over- or under-challenged, and the learning effect increases.

Four benefits of "adaptive learning"

1. Courses are not fixed in their form

When your courses and content are tailored to the needs of the participants, you can vary the content linguistically and in scope. The advantage: You don’t have to revert to the lowest common denominator and can adjust the content to the level of the learners. This ensures that all employees receive the essential information, and the curious can access additional material.

2. There is less boredom and confusion

Not all employees are at the same knowledge level. Therefore, fixed courses can lead some participants to feel bored. Conversely, it leads to confusion when you talk about topics and contents that are completely unknown to some course participants. With individualized learning materials, you can meet the needs of both groups.

3. The willingness to concentrate is higher

When you give employees the freedom to determine the extent and process of learning, the willingness to learn increases. Because: When employees don't have to suffer through a fixed training, they can focus their attention on the learning content that is new and relevant to them personally.

4. The joy in the learning process increases

Adult learners enjoy having control over how they learn. Through the positive experience of having an influence on the process themselves, you can further motivate employees, and they will find joy in the learning process.

Adaptive learning helps to advance the individual learning process and is just one way how learning can become even better in the future.

An example of an adaptive learning technique

That was quite theoretical, so we'll show you an example to conclude. A good method in the sense of adaptive learning is to have employees take interim tests. This way, as the person in charge, you can see who is at what stage, who is confident in the learning material, and who may need more material or exercises. Your learners can also check for themselves what they should review again.
