Students learn with learning videos that are an excellent supplement to classroom instruction. It has never been easier to produce good learning videos today, and more and more teachers are becoming learning video professionals. This is also true for the teachers of the Gesamtschule Höhscheid, where integrated learning is being tested. In schools, this is often referred to as the "flipped classroom" – during training sessions of "Blended Learning".

Questions and Answers about the Benefits of Learning Videos

Do videos promote independent learning or passive consumption?

For the students, independent learning is of course the main focus. The teaching is shifting from lecturing to self-guided, facilitated learning. With the videos, the students learn the basics, and in class, the teacher becomes a tutor who supports the students with questions and gives suggestions. A positive side effect: teachers can take more time for individual students.

How often can I use my learning videos?

A learning video is created once and can then be used as often as desired. To continually refine the videos, the teacher receives feedback from the students on which parts of the explanation can be improved. Improvements can also be made easily through skillful video editing.

Do all students stay on the same learning level?

In traditional teaching, all students must learn at the same pace. If one student does not understand a topic, all the other students have to wait. Often, there is not enough time for repeated, detailed explanations. Additionally, it can become frustrating for the teacher to explain a connection multiple times. A video, on the other hand, can be played as often as needed. The teacher as a tutor can keep all students on the curriculum and support those who need help. Faster students do not get bored, as additional videos are available for them.

Aren't learning videos just a trend?

Students today learn with the Internet and search for information on Google, Wikipedia, YouTube, and more. In moving images, complex relationships can often be illustrated better than in text. Taking a look at the online tutoring offerings or looking at the subscriber numbers of YouTube channels for tutoring (for example, TheSimpleMath with nearly 250,000 YouTube subscribers) quickly shows that there is a significant demand. Students are eager to learn with learning videos. And that will continue!

Why produce your own?

Teachers can adapt the created video material to their own classes. They specifically address the needs of their students. Of course, YouTube videos and other sources can also be integrated. However, searching for the right video often feels like finding a needle in a haystack. Producing your own is often faster.

And now you! Here’s how you can get started creating your own learning videos

No master has fallen from the sky yet. This means that at first, you will need some time and practice when creating learning videos, but media production has never been easier and cheaper than today. Your first step can be to simply grab your smartphone and start recording. Here’s a brief guide for you:

An example of successful learning videos is the Gesamtschule Höhscheid. Here, Konstantin Ristl and Michael Witzke from blink.it assist teachers in video production and advise the school management on implementing the blended learning concept. The participating teachers were initially familiarized with the blink.it App in a workshop and then learned how to create learning videos.

The involved teachers have since expanded their curriculum with short learning videos and make them available through the blink.it App. In addition to videos, teachers can also create short texts, presentations, and quiz questions for the students. The students now have the option to work with the provided content both in class and at home.
