Videos in Training - In Conversation with Wolfgang Schneiderheinze Part 3

How videos can be used in online coaching is not clear to every trainer or coach at first glance. Konstantin Ristl (blink.it) and Wolfgang Schneiderheinze (menschenspiegel) discussed the benefits and creation of online coaching. In three parts so far, it is about their experiences with online coaching (Part 1 and Part 2). Today's third part focuses on the role of video content in coaching.

As central questions, the following will be clarified this time:

  • What do participants and clients say about the videos?

  • How are the videos created?

  • How are the videos integrated into the training concept?

  • How can video material be reused?

You can view all the answers here (Duration: approx. 4 minutes):

Here is a brief summary of what type of online coaching it is: Wolfgang Schneiderheinze offers in his online coaching the tools that he has presented in his in-person training sessions. These include, for example, videos with explanations about individual training methods, concrete exercise instructions, or queries about the application of his methods. Additionally, all participants receive a weekly task. He also sends this task as a short video message to his participants. The participants first refresh the content independently of the trainer. Open questions regarding practical transfer are clarified through comments in blink.it and subsequent phone coaching. You can find more about the introduction of online coaching in the second part of Wolfgang Schneiderheinze's interview.

What influence do videos have on Wolfgang Schneiderheinze's training?

For his training, video content initially held little significance. Creating videos himself was mainly an experiment with the iPad for Wolfgang, especially at the beginning. He quickly realized that a concept or a framework is needed to achieve the best possible effect. The videos should not only bridge the time between individual in-person appointments. The video content is intended to be integrated into the training and to support participants in changing their behavior. How did Wolfgang proceed? He based his work on this idea: Start with those exercises that occur most frequently in his existing training sessions. For you, these could be, for example, the 5 most common techniques that you use in your training. Gradually, he then added further techniques and built a foundation from which he can select individual or multiple videos for most of his training.

This opened up new possibilities with video messages and educational videos. At the request of clients and participants, he can create additional videos in specific groups as needed and depending on the scope of the project. Because Wolfgang regularly creates videos himself, he has gained experience. He produces finished videos for his online coaching in a short time.

The video content is well received by his participants. They appreciate these personally spoken messages, regular exercises, and suggestions. Moreover, Wolfgang is able to stay in contact with his participants between in-person appointments in this way. Wolfgang also receives feedback from the participants: those who want to practice with the videos during the week ask him questions via the comment function. Other participants or Wolfgang himself can then respond to those questions. Many of his participants rate this support very positively in the course evaluation. Wolfgang can also objectively report back to his client about how many of the videos have been viewed and which online contents (e.g., worksheets, tasks, queries) have been worked on.

These reasons speak for video content in training:

  • Before the training, the expectations and wishes of the participants can be addressed

  • Concrete and personalized exercises for the participants

  • The client receives feedback on the (video) offer

  • Videos complement the media mix and provide variety. It applies: "Video is the new text"

  • Reusability of the produced videos for multiple clients
